What are PureTextTools, and who are they for?

PureTextTools is a free collection of text utilities designed for anyone who works with words regularly. That includes content writers checking their word count before submitting to a client, developers formatting messy JSON from an API response, SEO professionals reviewing passive voice in their articles, and designers who need a quick block of Lorem Ipsum to fill a wireframe.

We built this because most text tools online either require you to sign up for an account, put an annoying word limit on free usage, or — more worryingly — send everything you type to a remote server. PureTextTools doesn't do any of that. Every tool runs entirely inside your web browser using JavaScript. Nothing you paste or type here is ever sent anywhere.

How our browser-based tools work

When you open a tool like the word counter or JSON formatter, the logic for processing your text is already downloaded to your browser as part of the page. When you paste in your content and click a button, the calculation or transformation happens on your device — your laptop, your phone, your tablet — not on a server somewhere in a data centre.

This approach has a few real benefits beyond just privacy:

Speed. There's no round-trip to a server, so results are instant even on a slow connection.
Reliability. The tools keep working even if your internet drops mid-session.
Security. Sensitive content — passwords you're testing, private documents, API keys — stays on your machine.

Word and character counter

This is the most-used tool on the site, and for good reason. Whether you're writing a meta description (usually capped at 155–160 characters), a tweet (280 characters), a LinkedIn post, or an essay with a strict word limit, you need to know exactly how long your text is. Our character counter shows word count, character count with and without spaces, sentence count, and paragraph count — all updating as you type.

Diff checker

The diff checker lets you compare two versions of any text side by side. It highlights exactly what's been added, removed, or changed between the two. Writers use it to track edits from editors. Developers use it to compare config files or code snippets. Anyone who works with documents that go through multiple revisions will find it useful. It handles everything from a couple of sentences to thousands of lines.

Passive voice checker

Passive voice isn't always wrong, but it tends to make writing feel vague and distant. "The report was submitted by the team" is weaker than "The team submitted the report." Our passive voice checker scans your text and highlights every sentence that uses a passive construction, so you can decide which ones to rework. It's particularly helpful for blog posts, landing page copy, and academic writing.

JSON formatter and validator

Minified JSON is unreadable at a glance. Our formatter takes a compressed or malformed JSON string and turns it into properly indented, human-readable output. It also validates the JSON and tells you if there are syntax errors — missing commas, unmatched brackets, incorrect quote usage. A daily tool for anyone doing API development or working with data files.

Fancy text generator

The fancy text generator converts ordinary text into Unicode character variants — bold, italic, script, gothic, bubble letters, and dozens more. These aren't fonts in the traditional sense; they're actual Unicode characters that look like styled text. That's why they work anywhere you can paste text: Instagram bios, Twitter, Discord, Reddit, and anywhere else that doesn't let you apply HTML formatting.

A note on privacy

We take the "pure" part of PureTextTools seriously. We use Google Analytics to understand basic traffic patterns (which tools are popular, which countries visitors come from) and Google AdSense to display advertisements that keep the site free. Neither of these involves your actual text content. The words you type into our tools are processed locally and discarded when you close the tab.
